Ruger 10/22 and Charger Trigger Work
|
Bill Ruger's original design was simple and inexpensive to manufacture. Accordingly, the factory Ruger parts in are mass-produced and designed for a generic fit. This is to say that a trigger assembly or bolt from one 10/22 or Charger can be substituted into another and it will function properly. This does not mean, however, that mass-produced parts function as well as they could. We have seen factory triggers that required 9 #'s of pull!!! A simple cleanup of its metal junction points and adding some shims reduced the trigger pull nearly 5#. That is still more than most of us prefer for target shooting, and there is still plenty of room for improvement. 3rd Millennium Engineering Level II & Level III Trigger Group Owner's Manual |

The biggest "trick" to a
quality action job is the smoothing and cleaning up minor burrs and nicks on the metal surfaces
of the action parts. This is done by hand, and would
be very labor intensive and cost-prohibitory if it were done on every rifle
at the factory. Some owners are perfectly happy with their trigger right out of the
box, but many want a crisp and clean trigger that only a hand-crafted
trigger job can produce. We DO NOT just drop-in some aftermarket parts and
hope for the best like some gunsmiths! Every trigger job blends the parts in your trigger group
with our custom made parts for perfect alignment and smooth, reliable
function. We often get requests for a trigger that is "as light as possible." Don't be too fast to jump on to the "lighter is better" bandwagon! Given enough time and patience, we could make a trigger group with less than 1# of pull, however it would not be safe to use! It might be OK for a single shot bench rest target rifle, but little else. Even the force of closing the bolt or sliding the safety on or off would likely have enough inertia to cause an unexpected discharge and make the rifle unsafe. |
|
Generally speaking, 3 to 4 #'s is ideal for hunting and plinking, or for any situation where the rifle is going to be carried while loaded. For a target version, 2 to 3 #'s is very light and crisp. Anything less, puts you at risk to experience problems and offers little to no advantage in overall accuracy. For safety reasons, we will not reduce your trigger pull to less than 2 #'s. We also offer a trigger group designed for CMP competition. The trigger pull is set to a consistent 3.2# providing the shooter a crisp trigger break with no take-up or creep while assuring it will beat the 3#+ rule. Ask us for details, or if you have other specific needs, we will be happy to try and meet them.

Level I Trigger/Action We add a precision ground Power Custom hammer to result in reduced trigger pull. An extra power hammer spring and hammer shims are also included. The hammer is shimmed as necessary to hold it in proper alignment. The Level I Action Job produces a lighter trigger pull with a faster lock time. Nominal trigger pull is greatly reduced, but there will be some creep and take-up in the trigger pull. This is the trigger job I recommend for a factory 10/22 that you plan to use for hunting. Level I Options *Auto bolt release $5.00 |

Trigger overtravel stop shown with optional Skeeter's wide trigger |
Level III Super Match Trigger Job We replace the hammer with our custom ground and lightened hammer. The sear is replaced with our version featuring an adjustable engagement to eliminate trigger creep and take-up. The trigger is drilled with an sear adjustment opening allowing adjustment without removing the trigger, and a nylon-tipped overtravel screw is installed in place of the factory trigger return spring and plunger. The trigger return system is modified with our internal torsion spring system that nearly eliminates friction and extra pressure against the trigger. All the engagements are polished and shims are installed to eliminate lateral play. The springs are replaced and tuned for optimum resistance. The result is a crisp and clean trigger pull that is extremely consistent, with no take-up or overtravel. The Level III Action Job is top of the line, and produces the lightest possible trigger pull with the fastest lock time.
